Motivation is an essential ingredient to successful second language (L2) learning. In this presentation key concepts from psychology that relate to L2 motivation will be highlighted, including the self-concept, self-discrepancy theory, possible selves, and the L2 motivational self-system. Following this, trends in researching L2 motivation will be discussed.
